Here are some of the basic parts of SAS program for all those SAS users who are beginner in SAS field should have a quick look over it.

All the beginners might be aware about the two building blocks in the SAS program: DATA ‘steps’ and PROC (procedures).  Let us discuss as shown below:

•  There is no requirement for SAS procedures for execution of data step before them

•  OPTIONS to manage the appearance of output and log files.

• You manipulate the data i.e. creating variables, recoding etc in DATA step. The data step sets the format as per the requirement of SAS i.e. in a format that SAS can understand

•  A SAS data file can have upto three parts. Headers, matrix of data values and indexes. Now headers contain the descriptive information of dataset contents. Indexes to be saved in separate physical files. But still SAS consider indexes as a part of data file. If index is present, it should not be removed from the directory where the data file exists in.

•   In SAS, the execution of the data step is done statement by statement and observation by observation.

•  Missing values are denoted by period (“,”). Most operators circulate missing values. Let’s take an example. If there are three values say, (v1, v2, v3) and v2 is missing for observation 10, then missing value for observation 10 will be obtained by creating sum total of all three values i.e. (v1, v2, v3)

• For the sum of non-missing values, use SUM function: total=sum (v1, v2, v3). But take  a note that for comparison operators, SAS treats missing values as infinitely negative numbers.

• To run statistics on data sets. PROCs are used. In turn it can generate datasets as output. Output data sets are extremely useful

•    For DATA step and PROC boundary In windows, the procedures must end with a “RUN;” statement.

•   In UNIX, it is not necessary to end procedure with “RUN;” statement as SAS reads the entire program in the earlier stage itself before execution. It determines DATA step boundaries when it stumble upon the PROC and it knows the boundary of PROC when followed by another PROC or DATA step

Today I want to make clear regarding the opportunities that existing after pursuing for SAS training. I won’t go round and round, simply am coming to the main point.

Initially let me initiate with the companies. Once you complete B Pharm and if you prefer for a job or would go for M Pharm degree, then after completion you will land your professional job only with Pharmaceutical companies. On the other hand, after completing B Pharm, If you go for handy experience and pursue for SAS training, then the world is all yours. You will land your professional career in Pharmaceutical companies along with various Clinical research organizations and SAS consultants. Next concern is regarding opportunities. If you hunt for a job on the bases of B Pharm or M Pharm, you will avail with the opportunities such as Marketing, Manufacturing, Q.A./Q.C.(CR), Medical Transcription. Whereas there are abundant opportunities after SAS training. You will avail with job profiles such as SAS Programmer, SAS Clinical Researchers & Bio statisticians, SAS Clinical trial Programmers, Clinical Data manager, Assistant SAS programmer, SAS Data validation specialist, SAS Quality Assurance specialist and SAS Project manager.

Landing job with B Pharm or M Pharm will have your starting salary package as 1-2 lacs (Per annum) whereas as a SAS professional an individual (as a fresher) will have 1.8-3.6 lacs (Per Annum). Here after B Pharm or M Pharm, the growth rate at 3-5 years of experience will lead you to the annual package of 2-4 lacs. While Job with SAS certification, at the growth rate of 3-5 years of experience will lead you to annual package of 3-6.5 lacs.

Sometimes you might be wondering that how PROC SQL is unique and different from other SAS procedures. So here is a stop to your question. I will let you know the basics of PROC SQL and how it differs from other SAS procedures.

PROC SQL is the SAS execution of Structured Query language. SQL is the standardized language that is most probably used to retrieve data and update data in tables. PROC SQL can be used as an unconventional and alternative to other SAS procedures or the DATA step. Following is the list and functioning of PROC SQL. You can use PROC SQL for the following reasons:

•      Retrieving data and manipulate SAS tables

•      Modifying data values/adding data values in table

•      Drop columns in table

•      Creating tables and views

•      Generating reports and join multiple tables

PROC SQL allows you to combine data from two different external databases/external databases and SAS data set and presenting them in a single table. You can view it below:

Now next let’s drift to how SQL is unique and differ from other SAS procedures

There are numerous ways in which PROC SQL differs:

•      Many statements in PROC SQL are composed of clauses. Let’s take an example to assist you better. The PROC SQL statement mentioned below consists of two statements i.e. PROC SQL statement and SELECT statement. Further the select statement is composed of various clauses such as SELECT, ORDER BY, WHERE and FROM

        proc sql;

        select empid,jobcode,salary,

        salary*.06 as bonus

        from sasuser.payrollmaster

        where salary<32000

        order by jobcode;

•      PROC SQL executes each query automatically. It does not require RUN statement. If say, you use the RUN statement with PROC SQL, SAS ignores the RUN statement. But it executes the statement asusual and make a note. It is shown below

        SAS Log

       1884 proc sql;

       1885 select empid,jobcode,salary,

       1886 salary*.06 as bonus

       1887 from sasuser.payrollmaster

       1888 where salary<32000

       1889 order by jobcode;

       1890 run;

       NOTE: PROC SQL statements are executed immediately;

       The RUN statement has no effect.

•    PROC SQL carry on and run after you submit a step. So in order to end this statement, you need to submit another PROC step, or a QUIT statement. The example is mentioned below:

      proc sql;

      select empid,jobcode,salary,

      salary*.06 as bonus

      from sasuser.payrollmaster

      where salary<32000

      order by jobcode;

      quit;

Note: SAS enterprise guide automatically inserts a QUIT statement to code when it is submitted to SAS. But still precaution should be taken and you be habituated to add the QUIT statement to the code.
