Some inspirational and motivational factors that can inspire Clinical SAS programmers : EpochResearch Institute India Pvt Ltd. (SASAuthorised Training : Ahmedabad | Bangalore | Chennai)

As we all know that almost every job requires highly motivated programmers along with the managers to motivate them. But the question rises – what about Clinical SAS programmers? Clinical SAS programmers are neither software developers nor statisticians. But they play a crucial role in the industry in filling a distinctive void.

We will define the three factors that can influence the programmer’s motivation. These covers three categories i.e. the working environment for the programmers, recognition and the team with which you are involved. In addition, Clinical SAS programmers are not the emblematic software developers whereas software developers have the computer science degree or other relative background or would surely have a least interest in programming world. This is not the case with the Clinical SAS programming. Clinical SAS programmers are derived from various backgrounds and in general they accidentally fall into the programming concepts. As a result we cannot group them in a single homogeneous group. As an alternative we have to classify them into different categories based upon their strength and weakness: The grouping can be likewise
  1.  The scientist
  1.  The statiscian
  1. Developer
  1. Programmer
The projects should be assigned based upon their aspects and this will ultimately motivate them in programming world. Now let’s focus on the factors that enable and inspire the Clinical SAS programmers in the programming world

Working environment:
Being Clinical SAS programmer itself is a complex mental activity and under such circumstances, the managers really need to create an environment that allows the programmers to groom and increase the thinking power. A programmer has to manage number of files and these files may contain complexities that need to be managed in order to generate an accurate output in a timely manner. If there is any sort of distraction, then it can cause major effect on the concentration and programmer’s ability to get the work done and at last losing the temperament and leading to frustration resulting into loss of motivation. The prevention measures should be taken in order to keep the programmer from being distracted and loosing focus on their work. Following factors can prove to be useful
  •  Hardware that easily retrieves the results quickly for the user
  • The servers and the networks should be reliable. Suppose you are in the midst of   developing a complex piece of code and all of sudden the programmer finds that the server is crashed. This will easily make the programmer frustrated.
  •   Even the workplace matters alot. It should be suitable, privacy should be maintained along with silence
The remaining two factors i.e. recognition and team work will be discussed in next part. Till time keep yourself updated with us.

We have already discussed last week regarding what are the requirements to become SAS programmer? Now have you have ever imagined that this is not enough for the programmers as the working environment should also be taken into consideration. So today we will cover some of the topics that will conclude regarding the working environment for the SAS programmers and how it should be.

As we all know that that statistical programmer generally works and have allocation in statistics department or CRO. If you are not aware then CRO means contract research organization. The focal role of the statistical programmers is to utilize all their supreme SAS skills so that they allow the clinical trials statisticians to execute their statistical analysis tasks more proficiently and in well organized manner. Below I have displayed the simple work process flow of statistical programmer

Now let’s come to the other different units of CRO and groups as well as individuals that you will be working with. They are Site management, data management, project management, quality assurance, medical writing and information technology. Now let’s discuss them:
Site management - The main purpose behind site management is usually to recruit doctors at clinics and train the staffs. The site management can be your responsibilities by helping to get the data go through clean and voluntarily usable form.

Data management - Usually the statistical programmer closely works with data management team. The core function of the data management team is to design case report form, data entry, data cleaning, data quality control, data coding, database design and setup and providing the clinical trial data for analysis. Finally the data management team will provide the statistical programmer with the data by way of relational data management system     and then it can be imported to SAS. It proves to be an extra advantageous if the statistical programmer is provided with well cleaned and coded clinical database that would ultimately save the programmer’s time.

Project management - The project manager provides with an oversight of the clinical trials. A project manager usually works with laboratories, pharmaceutical companies and CROs. The main exchange between the project manager and statistical programmer is the project manager has to work with programmer over the course of the clinical trials
Quality assurance - The main goal of the quality assurance team is to meet the standards as well as maintain the regulatory standards of the organization. Internal audits are also performed in order to check the regulatory standards at the organization. At last, the quality assurance team maintains the SOPs i.e. standard operating procedures

Medical writing - The purpose and tasks of the medical writers is to create documents for the organization. They usually help in writing the clinical study reports for FDA. They also write for NDA submission. On various occasions the medical writing group will request for additional data as they accumulate their reporting.

Information technology – The role for IT is generally to maintain the system infrastructure, maintenance and general computer help desk support. They will be also performing with some level of software development. You have to work with IT section for SAS configuration management and installation and desktop publishing. You have to work with an external IT staff in regard to information exchange technologies like FTP.
So these are the various facets of the working environment for the SAS programmer. Do yo know more regarding the same? You can share your views.

Most important and basic interview based questions for Clinical SAS : Epoch Research Institute India Pvt. Ltd. (www.epoch.co.in)

The most prominent tool of SAS – PROC SQL : EpochResearch Institute India Pvt Ltd. (SASAuthorised Training : Ahmedabad | Bangalore)
Clinical SAS interview question & answers
No need to brief in detail for you as the title itself suggests what I mean to say, So yes, you are thinking absolutely precisely about the topic. If you go through the post, this post will surely help you some or the other way for your interview based preparation.

Many of you wonder before appearing for an interview and get wedged before the interviewer when answering the technical questions. Instead of getting jammed, go through these questions and be self prepared thoroughly in order to crack your interview. I have listed some of the questions below:

      1.       Illustrate regarding the phase of Clinical trials
Phase I - Testing of a drug for the safety purpose
Phase II - After the testing the experimental drug is conferred to number of people to check its
effectiveness
Phase III – It is given to large number people to check it’s effectiveness along with that side effect to be checked and monitored and to be compared to commonly used treatments
Phase IV – The last phase includes the studies that include drug risk, benefits and advantages.

       2.       Explain the validation procedure?
Validation procedure is used to check the output of the SAS program. When the output generated by the validator matches to the output generated by the SAS programmer, then the program is deemed as valid.

       3.       How to perform the validation of the listing having 400 pages?
This is not possible manually. In order to validate, first convert the listing to data sets using PROC RTF and then you can compare using PROC COMPARE.

       4.       Per day, how many tables can be created?
Creating tables generally depends on the complexity of the tables. If there are similar type tables, atmost 4-5 tables can be created in a day.

       5.       How to generate tables, listings and graphs?
 We can generate as follows:
 Listings – PROC REPORT
Tables – PROC FREQ, PROQ MEANS, PROQ TRANPOSE and PROQ REPORT
Graph – PROC GPLOT etc

       6.       As per your experience, what PROC have you came across and used?
Procedures such as proc report, proc format,  proc sort,  etc.

       7.       Till now which data sets have you came across?
You can ans for the same that till now I have came across the data sets and worked with laboratory, demographic, analysis, adverse events and other data sets.

       8.       What are the documents that you have to submit to FDA?
I have to submit ISS and ISE documents.

       9.       How your experience with CDISC was and which version have you used?
I didn’t have any chance to work with CDISC but still I helped my project manager and statistician in CDISC. Version 3 was used.

      10.   Describe me something about SAS documentation?
Anything that we type in program to make it easily readable and explicable is called as SAS documentation. It includes header, footer, title etc.

So these were my some of the questions that would guide you for your preparation. In my next discussion and post, I‘ll come up with the next questions. You can comment for the same if you have any more queries. You can also contact us for SAS training.
